From the Introduction:

"This curriculum enables teachers and administrators to go beyond the abstract
into the real world of classrooms and their school. Students are not just told the
meaning of virtue words. They are immersed in them.

Thomas Lickona, developmental psychologist and author of Educating for Character,
asserts: "Schools must help children understand the core values, adopt or commit to them,
and then act upon them in their own lives."

"The final acting out of these values can be taken by giving students opportunity for
commuinty service and showing them how these values can be acted out in the
community, on the playground, in the cafeteria, and in the classroom."

"The goal (of the curriculum) is to make respect and responsibility central character
traits in the lives of all students...Success in making (other values) understood
depends on how well these first two are learned."
