Help them experience what it is like to be respected. It is then that they will settle for nothing less in their relationship to the opposite sex. Such is the dance between girls and boys!

Legacy Soothes The Savage Stressor

We at LEGACY are devoted to attacking STRESS as a serious contributor to dysfunctional and abusive family behaviors. Stress - a relatively benign word for what motivates a myriad of destructive and self-destructive behaviors! As stress has increased in our homes, on our jobs, on the streets, in the schools, and even in our play, so has alcohol and drug abuse. These two factors correlate as readily for teens as they do for adults.

Stress is actually fear, often disguised as other emotions. Stress is the distillation of our fear of failure, not being enough, not being loved, not measuring up. Confronted with feelings of fear, whether conscious or unconscious, many youth and adults permute their fear into anger, willfulness, victimization and self-pity, or other emotions in an attempt to get control over that which they fear. Unfortunately, these emotional states do nothing to promote loving, compassionate, patient, kind, or thoughtful communication. Instead they provoke arguments and the battle of wills as everyone tries to be right. Anger, blame and resentment flourish and build a wall that becomes ever thicker between parents and teens.

There are a great many tools for relieving adult and teen stress. We will be offering more support products, seminars, and trainings to assist in conquering the stress that sometimes seems insurmountable in our lives. We encourage you to watch for life balance seminars or write us with interest for youth and adults. Keep an eye on Products for You on our website for books, videos, CD-ROM’s, meditation tapes and e-books specific to youth and adult issues.
By all means, e-mail us with requests and interest at Comments@legacyofhope.com

Lastly, we have just received shipment of TEEN POWER AND BEYOND, the newest book in the Teen Power Series. Susie’s chapter, Your Life is in the Balance, addresses life stressors that influence teens and their choices. As always, look for Susie’s brand of hopeful message.

As John Gardner says, “The primary function of a leader is to keep hope alive.” Be a leader, give others hope!

Update On Alcohol Issues

European Youth Drink
Irresponsibly, Too

A study found that European youth are just as irresponsible about drinking alcohol as their American counterparts, the Associated Press reported July 19.

According to a comparison of European and U.S. data by the U.S. Justice Department’s Office of Juvenile and Delinquency Prevention, nearly half of European countries have youth alcohol-abuse rates that are higher than those in the United States.

In addition, the research showed that more European youth reported drinking alcohol in the last 30 days, and more European than American teens reported drinking five or more drinks in a row.

The study was conducted to determine whether Europe’s liberal drinking-age policies encouraged more-responsible drinking behavior among young people. “There is no evidence that the more liberal policies and drinking socialization practices in Europe are associated with lower levels of intoxication,” the report stated.
