Ireland Considers Vaccinating Against Drug Addiction
The Irish government is being asked to consider a radical approach to fighting addiction: vaccinating children against future heroin, cocaine, and nicotine misuse.

The program would be similar to past nationwide vaccination programs for measles, mumps, and rubella.

“People could be vaccinated against drugs at birth as you would against measles. You could say cocaine is more dangerous than measles, for example.

It is important that there is a debate on this issue. This is a huge topic- addiction and smoking are major causes of premature death,” said committee member DavitNutt, a leading government drugs adviser.

Drug vaccinations are currently in development by pharmaceutical companies and could be on the marked within two years.

Brazilian Woman Turns in 1,300 Guns
Under Brazil’s new guns-for-money disarmament program, a Sao Paulo woman turned in 1,300 firearms and received $65,000.

The woman, who said her deceased father was a gun collector, turned in a collection of weapons that ranged from muskets to mortar shells.

Since the program began on July 15, police have received more than 5,362 million weapons.

Under the program, owners receive $100 for each gun they turn in, whether licensed or illegal.

The goal of the gun buyback is to reduce firearm availability/ Brazil has one of the worlds highest murder rates.

Sweden Hosts World Cup for Homeless
Twenty-eight countries will be participating in the second annual soccer Homeless World Cup, an event aimed at raising awareness of the problems facing homeless people.

“The World Cup should cast light on the problems of the homeless and their misery,” said organizer Bernhard Wolf of Austria. “It is also pure therapy for those taking part, because football [soccer] has a magic effect.”

The games, which will be played in Gothenburg, Sweden, feature 300 players, several of whom had their lives put back in track through agencies that helped them find housing, treatment for alcohol and other drug addiction, and job training.

The United States, Brazil, and Namibia are among the countries participating this year. Next year’s tournament is slated to be held in New York.

Russia Bans Prime-Time Alcohol Ads
Seeking to protect children from alcoholism, the Russia legislature has banned alcohol ads from television between the hours of 10 A.M and 7 P.M.

The move comes amid reports that 22,000 Russians under the age of 14 are addicted to alcohol. The legislation also will bar alcohol ads featuring people, animals, or cartoon figures, as well as ads that suggest that drinking will help consumers reach goals, improve health or mental capacity, or slake thirst.

Per-capita beer consumption in Russia has rise dramatically in recent years, from 37 liters annually in 1999 to 51 liters in 2003. Brewers have objected to the ad ban, even as they insist they don’t want to sell beer to children under 18.

Guns from Around the World Used to Make Peace Fountain
Firearms used in serious crimes throughout the world will now be used to build a peace fountain in the United States.

The United Kingdom recently sent more than 2,000 guns used by criminals to Ohio, where they will be melted for the fountain.

“This method of destroying firearms, once they are not required for court, is not unusual for us, and not normally something we publicize for security reasons,” said Greater Manchester Police Deputy Chief Constable Alan Green. “However, this is an exception as it is great that something good can come out of something evil.”

The fountain, scheduled to be completed by September 11, 2006, will serve as a symbol for peace.

Smoking by Canadian Teens Declines Dramatically
Health Canada survey finds that in the past five years, smoking among Canadian teenagers has dropped significantly.

Murray Kaiserman, director of surveillance evaluation for Health Canada’s Tobacco Control Program credited the decline in teen smoking to the government’s four year Federal Tobacco Strategy. The effort features mass-media campaigns and school-based programs.

Other initiatives given credit for the decline include higher cigarette takes, restrictions on smoking, and the placement of graphic visual warnings on cigarette packages.

“We’re seeing a new generation of Canadian youth who view smoking very differently than their parents did. They don’t view smoking as a socially acceptable phenomenon,” Kaiserman said. “We have fewer youth smoking and a greater number of adults quitting and at earlier ages. We’re satisfied that our efforts have been working.”
