Program
Targets Teen Substance Abusers
Hazelden,
an internationally acclaimed
addiction treatment provider
leading the addiction field
since 1949, published 'Teen
Intervene' curriculum in 2003
to meet a critical teen need.
According to Elina Kala, a licensed
alcohol and drug counselor at
Hazelden Center for Youth and
Families (HCYF, resources are
available for teens with addictions,
but "it gets more challenging
with the underage experimenters".
Teens who
have been caught drinking alcohol
or smoking pot but who are not
chemically dependent and who
barely meet the criteria for
substance abuse need appropriate
guidance, especially when it
is the first occurrence of underage
experimentation. Ms. Kala shares
that parents are often scared
and shocked and want something
to be done for their kids.
The 'Teen
Intervene' curriculum was developed
by Ken Winters, Ph.D., director
of the Center for Adolescent
Abuse Research at the University
of Minnesota and member of Hazelden's
Butler Center for Research Scientific
Advisory Panel. "Teen Intervene
helps clinicians speak to teenagers
who have experimented mild to
moderate problems related with
substance abuse. This program
consists of three sessions (each
about 90 minutes) that incorporates
stages of change theory, cognitive-behavioral
therapy, and motivational interviewing.
These are time-tested therapeutic
components that have been simplified/adjusted
for adolescents. The third session
involves the parents. Including
the parents helps them to focus
on information and options to
figure out what is normal and
whether or not they need to
be highly concerned about their
teen(s), or closely the teen(s)
should be monitored. A facilitator
provides an overview and history
of the curriculum, step-by-step
instructions for conducting
each session, and forms and
worksheets for adolescents and
parents."
According
to Kim Lundholm-Eades, licensed
marriage and family therapist
and supervisor of Family Services
at HCYF, "The motivational
questioning techniques get young
people to take a deeper look
at their drug and alcohol use
and encourages them to make
an individual commitment to
change." Kala also added
that most of the teen participants
are cooperative and engaged
because they can define their
own problems and develop their
own goals and obstacles to achieve
those goals as they go through
the workbook with their counselor.

Students
Big Influence on Smoking Decisions
of Peers
A study
conducted in Arizona of 25 elementary
and middle schools found that
non-smoking students are the
key in helping their peers quit
smoking or preventing them from
ever starting. John Sciacca,
a professor of health promotion
at Northern Arizona University
said, "Peer influence is
one of the important influences
on a youth's decision to use
tobacco." In order to see
how peer influence can prevent
smoking, Sciacca and a team
of researchers from the University
of Arizona and Arizona State
University used a program called
Champs Have and Model Positive
Peer Skills (CHAMPS), which
is a model to train and empower
students. School counselors,
nurses, principals, parents,
and community representatives
are trained to be CHAMPS leaders,
and they select students to
be peer helpers. These student
helpers hold activities, such
as skits and games, aimed at
tobacco prevention. The results
of the study showed that schools
that used the CHAMPS program
had students who were less likely
to have smoked and were more
aware of the dangers of tobacco
use. Some students also said
that they would smoke if a best
friend offered them a cigarette.

Colleges
Focus on Suicide
The
Associated Press reported that
colleges and universities are
becoming more aware of the issue
of suicide on campus and are
offering suicide-prevention
resources. "Suicide is
the second-leading killer of
college students, after car
accidents." Resources such
as Ulifeline, a free website
that provides students with
confidential help and a list
of mental-health centers in
their area, are being offered
by 120 colleges nationally.
According to psychologists,
"the pressure to excel,
combined with problems like
depression, bipolar disorder,
and drug misuse, often contribute
to suicidal tendencies."
Connie Horton, director of counseling
and consultation services at
Illinois Wesleyan University
in Bloomington says, "The
good sign is that students are
driven, they're motivated, and
they're highly conscientious,
the downside is that they can
be really hard on themselves,
and normal failures can be viewed
as disasters." To address
this issue, some universities
started to offer 'perfectionistic-thinking
seminars' designed to explain
to students that below-average
academic performance does not
mean failure.
