Welcome
to November 2010 'News of Hope'
This fall has shown a new, though not
unexpected, trend -- a widespread
rekindling of action by educators,
community coalitions, parents and
treatment professionals to find
funding and to focus on PREVENTION
WITH A PASSION!
We watched and agonized while the
financial meltdown of the past two
years dried up prevention dollars
along with school budgets, but we also
knew that reduced prevention messages
would allow substance abuse among both
youth and adults, teen pregnancy, and
gangs to flourish. And the adults who
care can no longer watch this insanity
happen --
This Thanksgiving season, we THANK
every one of you who feels as
passionately as we do to save a child,
a family, a community - our nation -
from the ravages of substance abuse
and it''s destructive by-products on
the fabric of our society.
Our outreach to stimulate the growth
of EMOTIONAL WISDOM in
our youth AND parents is being
welcomed with open arms. Both youth
and adults get that their decisions
are based in feelings including
stressed feelings. They also
get that we live in a society that
says "Don''t feel and Don''t
deal," instead - take a drink,
pop a pill, snort a line, eat too
much, gamble too much, escape into sex
- video games - violence. But there
ARE consequences.
SO, it''s about HEALTHY EMOTIONAL
COPING SKILLS in a language kids and
parents can understand.
THANKS FOR GETTING THE MESSAGE!
THANKS FOR CARRYING THE MESSAGE in
your own unique way!
THANKS FOR CARING!
Happy Thanksgiving from all of us
at LEGACY!

Summary
for
October
26,
2010
Some
doctors
say
drinks
that
combine
alcohol
with
caffeine
should
be
banned
because
they''re
dangerous,
ABC
News
reported
Oct.
20.
Marketed
in
large,
colorful
cans
under
names
like
Four
Loko,
Joose,
and
Torque,
the
drinks
are
popular
among
college
students.
The
23.5-ounce
canned
drinks
can
contain
12
percent
alcohol
and
156
milligrams
of
caffeine,
and
have
encountered
increasing
criticism.
Attorneys
general
in
more
than
one
state
are
concerned
that
they''re
being
marketed
to
minors,
a
New
Jersey
college
banned
them,
and
the
Food
and
Drug
Administration
(FDA)
is
deciding
whether
or
not
the
drinks
are
legal.
Dr.
Robert
McNamara,
who
directs
the
emergency
medicine
department
at
Temple
University,
recently
encountered
his
first-ever
case
of
a
healthy
19-year-old
whose
heart
attack
seemed
to
be
linked
to
consuming
alcoholic
energy
drinks.
"This
is
a
dangerous
product
from
what
we''ve
seen,"
McNamara
said,
who
said
other
doctors
had
told
him
about
similar
cases.
"It
doesn''t
have
to
be
chronic
use.
I
think
it
could
happen
to
somebody
on
a
first
time
use."
"I''m
mad
as
hell,"
said
Doctor
Mary
Claire
O''Brien
of
Wake
Forest
University.
"These
drinks
are
not
safe."
O''Brien,
who
is
a
professor
of
emergency
medicine
and
public
health,
recently
completed
a
study
that
showed
that
consuming
alcohol
with
caffeine
was
more
harmful
than
drinking
alcohol
alone.
Those
who
consumed
both
were
at
least
two
times
as
likely
--
compared
to
those
drinking
alcohol
without
caffeine
--
to
be
hurt,
need
medical
attention,
take
sexual
advantage
of
another,
or
accept
a
ride
with
someone
who
was
inebriated.
"They
can''t
tell
that
they''re
drunk,"
O''Brien
explained.
"What
this
behavior
gets
is
a
wide
awake
drunk."
The
FDA
has
said
that,
under
regulations
governing
food
additives,
caffeine
can''t
be
mixed
with
alcohol.
It
is
currently
evaluating
whether
the
drinks
should
remain
legal,
but
no
deadline
has
been
set
for
a
decision.
"FDA
intends
to
evaluate
the
information
submitted
by
the
manufacturers
and
other
available
scientific
evidence
as
soon
as
possible
in
order
to
determine
whether
caffeine
can
be
safely
and
lawfully
added
to
alcoholic
beverages,"
said
Michael
Herndon,
a
spokesman
for
the
FDA.
Phusion
Projects,
which
manufactures
Four
Loko,
told
ABC
News,
"No
one
is
more
upset
than
we
are
when
our
products
are
abused
or
used
unlawfully.
But
Four
Loko
is
neither
the
sole
contributor
to
alcohol
abuse,
nor
will
additional
restrictions
on
it
solve
the
problem."

The
whole
energy
drink
business
has
got
out
of
hand.
Here
is
a
radical
idea
ban
those.
Anything
on
the
shelf
has
the
potential
to
be
abused.
Some
of
the
overdoses
related
to
energy
drinks
had
liquor
in
them
too.
Energy
drinks
are
just
too
dangerous
considering
the
high
potency
in
them
and
the
effects
any
amount
of
alcohol
can
cause
when
mixed.

Lew,
you
would
have
to
chug
(not
sip)
about
5
Irish
coffees
to
get
the
same
effect
as
ONE
of
these
cans.
They
are
heavily
marketed
towards
the
underage
sector
and
these
young
people
are
pounding
2-3
at
a
time.
Plus
they
are
chasing
them
and
mixing
them
with
additional
shots
of
liquor.
Generally
you
might
pass
out
after
chugging
the
equivalent
of
2
bottles
of
wine,
but
the
caffeine
allows
you
to
stay
awake
longer
and
not
feel
drunk
so
you
try
to
drink
more.
These
beverages
are
NOT
to
be
confused
with
a
rum
and
coke
or
an
Irish
coffee.
They
are
entirely
different
animals.
And
yes,
they
are
cheap.
$2.50
for
one
can
which
is
waaay
cheaper
than
5
beers
of
any
brand
I
can
think
of.
Very
appealing
to
young
people
with
limited
assets.

Synthetic
cannabis
is
known
by
many
names
including
Spice,
K2,
Pep
Spice,
Genie,
Black
Mamba,
Triple
X,
Bliss,
Dragon
and
Bombay
Blue.
Its
chemical
make-up
is
designed
to
mimic
the
effects
of
THC,
the
primary
component
of
marijuana
that
produces
the
“high”
and
its
impact
varies
from
person
to
person.
The
effect
of
synthetic
cannabis
on
the
user
can
be
up
to
15
times
more
powerful
than
marijuana
because
the
chemical
composition
ranges
from
0.2%
to
3.0%.
Adverse
side
effects
include
hallucinations,
delusions,
severe
agitation,
elevated
heart/blood
pressure,
vomiting,
tremors
and
seizures.
Synthetic
cannabis
is
readily
available
online,
through
magazines
and
in
smoke
shops,
liquor
stores
and
gas
stations.
It
is
marketed
as
incense
or
potpourri
and
packages
are
labeled
“not
fit
for
human
consumption.”
The
synthetic
drug
is
undetectable
in
the
body
and
its
appeal
to
students
is
its
relatively
low
cost,
which
is
comparable
to
marijuana.
Synthetic
cannabis
is
illegal
in
several
states
and
many
countries
and
is
banned
by
all
branches
of
the
military.
However,
it
is
currently
legal
in
most
states
and
is
not
regulated
by
federal
agencies.

Working
Moms
May
Help
Teen
Behavior,

Risky
Choices
Another
great
article
in
Broward
County
Parenting
Teens
Examiner
on
October

by
Sue
Scheff!
It
is
a
relief
to
hear
that
“Especially
during
these
difficult
economic
times
it
is
good
to
know
that
if
a
mother
needs
to
go
to
work,
or
wants
to
have
her
career,
it
can
actually
benefit
your
kids
and
teens.”
Scheff
shares,
“New
research
from
the
University
of
California
finds
that
for
some
families,
having
mom
on
the
job
is
really
a
good
thing.
The
added
income
reduces
the
child''s
stress
not
to
mention
the
stress
of
the
parents,
offers
additional
opportunities
and
provides
a
positive
role
model.
And
teens
are
not
more
likely
to
engage
in
risky
behavior
just
because
their
mothers
work
long
hours.”
She
continues,
“Children
whose
mothers
return
to
work
before
their
children
turn
3
are
no
more
likely
to
have
academic
or
behavioral
problems
than
kids
whose
mothers
stay
at
home,
according
to
a
review
of
50
years
of
research.
This
is
refreshing
to
hear.
Critical
for
working
moms
is
to
keep
their
teens
accountable
for
their
whereabouts,
as
well
as
who
they
are
hanging
out
with.
“
Just
because
a
parent
is
working
is
not
an
excuse
for
your
teen
to
be
hanging.
Get
a
good
schedule
working
for
your
family,”
says
Scheff.
Many
researchers
today
say
that
the
most
important
element
of
the
parent-child
relationship
is
the
quality
of
that
relationship.
Says
Scheff,
“Mothers
who
find
their
own
lives
fulfilling
are
happier
people
and
better
role
models.
Most
studies
have
found
that
work-family
conflict
and
positive
spillover
are
at
similar
levels
in
both
men
and
women.”
Excellent
suggestions
from
Scheff:
•
Utilize
any
available
work
alternatives
like
flex
schedules,
etc.
•
When
at
the
office,
don''t
embark
on
any
new
project
that
you
can''t
complete
30
minutes
before
leaving
for
the
day.
•
If
you
must
bring
work
home,
engage
in
quality
family
time
before
beginning
your
work.
•
Have
family
meals
together,
and
banish
the
distractions
of
television
and
radio.
•
Make
mornings
easier
by
preparing
the
night
before:
lay
out
children''s
clothes,
pack
lunches,
plan
tomorrow''s
dinner,
etc.
•
Seek
social
support
at
work
and
in
other
environments.
•
Reduce
and/or
reorganize
the
time
you
devote
to
work
or
family
demands.
•
Reduce
the
psychological
importance
of
one
or
more
of
your
roles.
•
Find
ways
to
lessen
or
better
cope
with
stress.
•
Remind
yourself
that
your
job
is
a
means
to
help
—
rather
than
harm
—
your
family.
•
Always
remember
that
most
teens
say
when
parents
are
knowledgeable
about
their
lives
they
are
least
likely
to
dabble
in
risky
behavior,
and
parents
who
try
to
be
in
the
know,
usually
are.

What's
Up with Teens and Tattoos?
Sue Scheff shares about
tattoos for teens in her
October 11, 2010 article,
“Tats for Teens” for the
Broward County Parenting Teens
Examiner. She provides
excellent information for
parents to consider, for
example, “A 2010 Pew
Research study found that
nearly 40 percent of young
people between the ages of 18
and 29 have tattoos, and of
those, half have two to five
tattoos. The study also found
that parents increasingly
support their kids'' decisions
to get tattoos.”
So, how do you feel about your
teen getting a tattoo?
As Scheff states, “It
is definitely becoming more
common now, and some people
believe it can even become
addictive.”
Tattoo laws for teens under 18
vary from state to state, and
in some cases even from city
to city. In some cities and
states, it is illegal for a
teen to get a tattoo without
parental consent.
Some chief concerns associated
with underage tattoos as
reported on Good Morning
America are:
• Worries that teens will
later regret their decision
• Fears that people,
including potential employers,
will treat a person with a
tattoo differently.
An important warning from
tattoo artists: inked art on
still-developing bodies can
change for the worse over time
as skin stretches.
Most importantly, as Scheff
shares, “If you are a
parent and allowing your teen
to get a tattoo please take
the appropriate precautions.
It is important to get it done
safely.
According to Scheff:
”Teen Health advises you if
you have a medical problem
such as heart disease,
allergies, diabetes, skin
disorders, a condition that
affects your immune system, or
infections — or if you are
pregnant — ask your doctor
if there are any special
concerns you should have or
precautions you should take
beforehand. Also, if you''re
prone to getting keloids (an
overgrowth of scar tissue in
the area of the wound), it''s
probably best to avoid getting
a tattoo altogether.
Safety matters - with your
health and with the services
you use. Be sure you are going
to a licensed and reputable
tattoo studio.
Professional studios usually
take pride in their
cleanliness. Here are some
things to check for:
• Make sure the tattoo
studio has an autoclave (a
device that uses steam,
pressure, and heat for
sterilization). You should be
allowed to watch as equipment
is sterilized in the
autoclave.
• Check that the tattoo
artist is a licensed
practitioner. If so, the
tattoo artist should be able
to provide you with
references.
• Be sure that the tattoo
studio follows the
Occupational Safety and Health
Administration''s Universal
Precautions. These are
regulations that outline
procedures to be followed when
dealing with bodily fluids (in
this case, blood). “
