| WELCOME
to June, 2007 - 'NEWS OF HOPE'

WELCOME to JUNE, 2007 -
'NEWS OF HOPE'
BREATHE A SIGH OF RELIEF -
It's Summer!
We hope you all will make time
for personal R&R this
summer!
In order to give LEGACY OF HOPE
the energy and authenticity
every audience deserves, my
summers are filled with yoga,
4-mile jogs with my husband, and
some
just-for-a-heck-of-a-lot-of-fun
"salsa" and
"tease jazz" classes
at my gym!
Not to mention making time to do
some of those things that a
heavy travel schedule does not
allow for: gardening, trying new
recipes, and getting together
with a lot of family and
friends.
Making life matter requires some
PLAY!
It's easy to forget HOW to play
after a hectic and stressful
year.
Many of you work in
schools/school systems where you
give SO much to SO many, and
usually with little
acknowledgement.
So, I hope you'll put yourself
in a safe and cozy place,
brainstorm, re-dream, and
nurture your precious self!
This newsletter includes some
details from the front lines of
prevention and emotional
well-being of teens that I think
are worth noting. If you have a
special teen topic you'd like us
to research for upcoming
newsletters, please just drop us
an email!

THIS
SUMMER
ISN'T
SAFE FOR
A LOT OF
KIDS ...
(CADCA
Coalitions
Online,
May 24,
2007 -
"Mulitple
Pieces
of Meth
Prevention
Legislation
Introduced
in
Congress")
This May
CADCA
article
shared a
heartwrenching
fact
that,
according
to a
recent
study by
the
Health
and
Human
Services
Department,
"1.6
million
children
live in
a home
where at
least
one
parent
abuses
illicit
durgs,
including
methamphetamine,
cocaine,
heroin
and
prescription
drugs."
More
dire
statistics
come
from The
National
Center
on
Alcohol
and
Substance
Abuse at
Columbia
University
(CASA)
in a
March,
2005
statement
that:
1) Half
of all
American
children
(35.6
million)
live in
a home
where a
parent
or other
adult
uses
tobacco,
drinks
heavily,
or uses
illicit
drugs,
2) 23.7
percent
of
children
(17
million)
live in
a
household
where a
parent
or other
adult is
a binge
or heavy
drinker,
and
3) 12.7
percent
(9.2
million)
live in
a
household
where a
parent
or other
adult
uses
illicit
drugs.
Congressman
Cardozza
-
"a
father
of two
children
adopted
through
the
foster
care
system",
remarked
about
the
"severe
mental
and
physical
toll
that
children
face
when
parents
are
addicted
to meth.
"Meth
is
extremely
dangerous
for
childrne
not only
because
meth
addicts
are more
likley
to abuse
and
abandon
their
childrne,
but also
because
meth-addicted
parents
often se
up meth
labs in
their
homes...
children
have
been
found at
labs
with
burns
from
spilled
ingredients
from the
methamphetamine
production
process,"
he
testified.
The
article
shared
that the
Drug
Enforcement
Administration
has
found
children
at 20%
of meth
lab
seizures.
"Meth
labs are
filled
with
toxins,
prone to
fire and
explosions,
and can
have
lasting
health
effects
on
children
exposed
to their
surroundings."
It was
further
observed
that
children
removed
from
meth
labs
have
unique
challenges
and
"require
special
attention
and care
to
transition
into
stable
residential
environments."
So
impactful
is
parental
meth
addiction
on a
child
that
many
county
social
service
agencies
feel the
need to
develop
speical
prototals
to deal
with
children
displaced
by
parental
meth
abuse.
In an
effort
to
address
the
challenges
of
children
abandoned,
neglected
or
abused
by
parents
addicted
to
drugs,
Congressman
Dennis
Cardoza
(D-CA.18th)
introduced
H.R.
1199,
the Drug
Endangered
Children
(DEC)
Act of
2007 in
the
House.
Dianne
Feinstein
(D-CA)
introduced
a
similar
bill in
the
Senate.

bills

WHAT'S
UP WITH
ANTI-ADDICTION
MEDICATIONS?
(VOICE,
Winter
2007 - A
biannual
newsletter
for the
Hazelden
community
of
patients,
family,
alumni,
professionals
and all
those
who are
touched
by the
disease
of
addiction),
"Hazelden
adds
anti-addiction
medications
as a
treatment
tool"
by Linda
E.
Peterson.
Hazelden
has
added
anti-medications
approved
by the
U.S.
Food and
Durg
Administration
(FDA)
for
treatment
of
alcooholism
since
December
1, 2006.
"Medications
such as
naltrexone
(ReVia)
and
acamprosate
(Campral)
are by
no means
considered
a 'magic
bullet'
in the
broad
Hazelden
treatment
spectrum.
Rather,
... one
tool
among
many,"
according
to
Hazelden's
National
Medication
Practices
Team.
"Research
has been
conducted
on
combining
the
medications
with
minimal
treatment,
so we ([Hazelden}
expect
that
combining
the
medicines
with a
treatment
program
of the
breadth
of ours
will
result
in
higher
rate of
effectiveness."
Fred
Holmquist,
director
of the
Hazelden
The
Lodge
Program
states,
"Current
brain
research
confirms
what the
text Alcoholics
Anonymous
has
taught
us for
years:
that the
main
problem
of the
alcoholic
cneters
on the
mind.
These
medications
may help
people
in early
absinence
be less
dogged
by the
euphoric
memories
of
alcohol
use."
Given
FDA
guidelines
on these
medications,
"Hazelden
medical
staff
will
prescribe
medications
only to
paitents
whose
drug of
choice
is
alcohol
and who
have
experienced
multiple
relapses,
multiple
treatment
attempts,
and who
describe
a great
deal of
craving."
Medications
that
will be
in use:
"Acamproasate
and
naltrexone,
including
Vivitrol
and
Disulfiram
(Antabuse).
Naltraxone
is an
anti-craving
medication
and,
according
to the
VOICE
article,
"people
with
extensive
cravings
and
multiple
relapses
tend to
show
more
positive
results
than
other
groups
of
patients."
OFten
people
quit
taking
their
meds, so
Vivitrol,
which is
"administered
by
injection
in a
doctor's
office
and has
an
effect
for a
month,
eliminates
the
issue of
compliance."
Acamprosate
studies
"show
some
alcoholics
have
longer
periods
of
abstinence
and less
relapse
when
this
medicine
is
prescribed."
Critical
in using
medications
to treat
addicition,
according
to Chris
Lind,
RN,
director
of
National
Health
Services
and
cochair
of the
Naitional
Medication
Practices
Team at
Hazelden,
is to be
aware
that
"None
of these
medicines
are as
effective
if you
don't
use
treatment
with
them."
More
medications
to
come...
The
Hazelden
VOICE
shares
Lind's
comment
that
"Current
study of
the
neurobiology
of
addiction
indicates
there is
a
marvelous
potential
for
intervening
to help
addicts
with a
pharmacological
approach.
In the
next
five to
10
years,
...
medicines
will be
developed
that
work
better
than
current
ones."
Hazelden
is a
leader
in
bombining
anti-addiction
medications
with
treatment
programs.

FAMILY DAY: The
Power of
Parenting
(From CADCA
Coalitions
Online, May 17,
2007):
"Whether
you´re cooking
a gourmet meal
or ordering food
from your
favorite
take-out place,
rest assured
that what your
kids really want
at the dinner
table is YOU!
Family meals are
the perfect time
to talk to your
kids and to
listen to
what’s on
their mind.
The National
Center on
Addiction and
Substance Abuse
at Columbia
University
launched Family
Day – A Day to
Eat Dinner with
your Children in
2001 after more
than a decade´s
worth of its
research
consistently
found that the
more often kids
eat dinner with
their families,
the less likely
they are to
smoke, drink or
use drugs.
Family Day is a
national
movement that
encourages
parents to
frequently eat
dinner with
their kids and
be involved in
their
children’s
lives. Family
Day is
celebrated
nationwide on
the fourth
Monday in
September,
September 24 in
2007.
Coalitions can
help increase
involvement in
Family Day in
their
communities by
requesting that
their states
proclaim
September as
Family Day.
Click below for
a sample
proclamation.
Proclamations
have already
been made in
most states, but
Arkansas, South
Dakota and Iowa
require a local
person to
request a
proclamation.
