Why do People Take Drugs?

I'm sure many of us who do not have addiction issues have had a loved one, friend or family whose abuse of alcohol or other substances baffled us. WHY do they do that to themselves?

Narconon is an organization that is "dedicated to helping people who are dependant on or addicted to drugs or alcohol to get through a successful drug rehabilitation program that will change their lives and the lives of their families.

In that effort, they also provide drug information, education about the effects of drugs, and effective drug rehabilitation program information.

They have a series of short videos that are helpful to understanding the addiction process. Just out is "Why do People Take Drugs?". It is short and to the point, a point that is compatible with the LEGACY OF HOPE® message.

In our vernacular, we believe people lack "Emotional Wisdom" - many lack the capacity or willingness to identify their emotions and lack the skills/upbringing/understanding of healthy emotional coping skills to process their feelings.

This video is succinct and says it well. Perhaps it will be a conversation starter to consider providing a powerful presentation to create awareness on the WHY
(like LEGACY OF HOPE®!) and a commitment to providing stress management training to youth and adults (like DE-STRESS FOR SUCCESS®) to deal with the WHY.

Check it out!

Addiction Is a 'Brain Disease'
Addiction Disrupts Brain Circuitry
From NIDA News Release
Updated November 30, 2004

"Drug addiction is a brain disease," says Dr. Volkow. "Although initial drug use might be voluntary, once addiction develops this control is markedly disrupted. Imaging studies have shown specific abnormalities in the brains of some, but not all, addicted individuals. While scientific advancements in the understanding of addiction have occurred at unprecedented speed in recent years, unanswered questions remain that highlight the need for further research to better define the neurobiological processes involved in addiction."

To further support this conclusion, drugabuse.gov/ScienceofAddiction shares the following:

"Throughout much of the last century, scientists studying drug abuse labored in the shadows of powerful myths and misconceptions about the nature of addiction. When science began to study addictive behavior in the 1930s, people addicted to drugs were thought to be morally flawed and lacking in willpower. Those views shaped society's responses to drug abuse, treating it as a moral failing rather than a health problem, which led to an emphasis on punitive rather than preventative and therapeutic actions. Today, thanks to science, our views and our responses to drug abuse have changed dramatically. Groundbreaking discoveries about the brain have revolutionized our understanding of drug addiction, enabling us to respond effectively to the problem.

As a result of scientific research, we know that addiction is a disease that affects both brain and behavior. We have identified many of the biological and environmental factors and are beginning to search for the genetic variations that contribute to the development and progression of the disease. Scientists use this knowledge to develop effective prevention and treatment approaches that reduce the toll drug abuse takes on individuals, families, and communities."

A great deal more information is available including such topics as:
* Which biological factors increase risk of addiction?
* What environmental factors increase the risk of addiction?
* What other factors increase the risk of addiction?

Any Exposure to Tobacco Smoke Can Damage DNA
Surgeon General: Any Exposure to Tobacco Smoke Can Damage DNA Immediately, Lead to Illness
Join Together Research Summary
December 16, 2010

Tobacco smoke causes immediate damage at the lowest levels of use and cigarettes are designed to be addictive, according to the 30th tobacco-related report of the U.S. Surgeon General, the Washington Post reported Dec. 9.

The 704-page report, the first on tobacco from current Surgeon General, Vice Admiral Regina M. Benjamin, M.D., stated that hundreds of more than 7,000 compounds in tobacco smoke are toxic, at least 70 of the compounds cause cancer, and no level of exposure to tobacco smoke is safe.

The lining of the lungs becomes inflamed upon first exposure to cigarette smoke, and the smoke can cause diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Heart disease is another common effect of cigarette smoke, including exposure to secondhand smoke, and diabetics who smoke may have more difficulty in controlling blood sugar.

"The chemicals in tobacco smoke reach your lungs quickly every time you inhale causing damage immediately," said Benjamin. "Inhaling even the smallest amount of tobacco smoke can also damage your DNA, which can lead to cancer."

Furthermore, cigarettes were designed to be addictive. Today, more than ever, according to the report, cigarettes deliver nicotine to the user more quickly and effectively than was the case years ago.

Matthew L. Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, said in a statement that the report "sends an unmistakable message to elected officials at all levels that reducing smoking is one of the most effective actions we can take to improve the nation''s health and prevent some of the most deadly and costly diseases in our society."

"This report makes it clear -- quitting at any time gives your body a chance to heal the damage caused by smoking," the Surgeon General said. "It''s never too late to quit, but the sooner you do it, the better."

The full report, How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease: The Biology and Behavioral Basis for Smoking-Attributable Disease, was published on the Office of the Surgeon General website.

LEGACY OF HOPE® - break through denial, create awareness, spawn HOPE!

LEGACY OF HOPE® stirs emotions and breaks through intellectual denial. It makes it safe for teens to reach out to Susie after assemblies during support group sessions to ask for help with childhood trauma and abuse, suicidal inclinations, and escape into self-harm/irresponsible sex/violence.

This is no ordinary message - it is a life-saving, life-changing message. And IT IS NOT FOR EVERYBODY!

It is not for your school or conference if you want facts and figures but do not want active engagement. It is not for your school if you are not ready to deal with deep and legitimate issues that teens bring to campus everyday. But IT IS FOR YOU if you are ready to deal with the tough realities.
